   The hospital wanted to discharge Dad, but he had to go to a Skilled Nursing Facility. There were no rooms available at SNFs nearby, so we had to look for places in other towns. Fortunately, a room did open up in Dad’s town. But, many of the other residents were from towns out of our area. So, for a hypothetical example, NSF patients who were from Smithtown were in Jonesburg, and patients from Jonesburg were in Smithtown.

   If I may drift in the conversation, this reminds me of Bert B. Beach. In an episode of American Religious Town Hall, he recalled that he was in South Africa in 1984, when the United States was having a Presidential election. The candidates were Ronald Reagan (R, incumbent) and Walter Mondale (D, former VP). People Dr. Beach were working with hoped Mondale would win:

   When Jimmy Carter was President, he had put pressure on the South African government to ease apartheid. But, when Reagan became President, he eased the pressure.

   In recounting that, Dr. Beach concluded that victims of apartheid in South Africa had more interest and more at stake in the outcome of the U.S. election than most Americans. And they couldn’t vote.
