There once was a man named McCann, McCann was the name of that man. The man was McCann, And McCann was a man, But everyone knew him as Nancy.

Look up “intersex.” Some people are born with ambiguous genitalia, and are both/neither “male” and/or “female.” Sometimes they identify as one or the other, sometimes not, sometimes their parents and doctors make the decision (without the baby’s consent) with surgery and hormone treatments, and sometimes the parents and doctors get it wrong.
That’s what happens when the ambiguity is VISIBLY APPARENT from birth, but there’s more to gender identity than chromosomes and “parts.” Hormone washes (both during fetal development and in puberty) and perhaps even brain structure have roles. How many transgendered people are simply “exactly as God made them” and are trying to live as their true selves, instead of being mentally ill? The science isn’t settled, but science has only recently even been asking the question. How often does this occur (and does that make a difference)? We don’t know, but if anyone who comes forward and self-reports is immediately treated as a psychiatric case, we’ll never find out.
When Nature draws a line, it is usually wavy, fuzzy, or permeable. That can be disconcerting to those who only think in “either/or” to the exclusion of “both/neither.”
