Trump has pretty much destroyed the Republican Party. It was heading towards ruin already, but he gave it the final shove.

I attended two Ivy League universities, and I got an excellent education at both. None of the professors attempted to promote any particular political line. I’m quite sure I was more to the left than any of the professors.

I’m fascinated to see this movement spread so widely and so quickly. This kind of movement is rarely just about the ostensible topic of protest. I suspect these demonstrations are an indication of a deep distress in young people today. That doesn’t mean they are right or wrong. But perhaps it’s worth thinking about. In case anyone cares, I am not totally in support of the demonstrations. Largely, but not totally. I fear the rise of a new antisemitism.

I was deeply involved in the anti-war protests, often as a leader and organizer. I and the people I worked with clearly understood that the soldiers were not the enemy and we never made them the targets of our protest. One of our slogans was “Support the Troops, Bring Them Home Now.” Reports of protests against the troops were vastly exaggerated and often completely fabricated.

Okay, here’s a taste. Maybe the worst part of US society and politics in the 50s and 60s was racism. I grew up in the segregated South, so I could see it at its worst. But the activism of the Civil Rights movement promise better things, and I would argue that there has been substantial improvement. Another change for the better has been women’s rights. Nixon, of course, was a disaster, but Trump is worse and doing what could be long-term damage to the political fabric of the country. He has pretty much destroyed the Republican Party. And the general state of the world now is very bad. That deserves a long post all on its own, but I have to get my day going and try to get some work done, so I will leave it there for now.

    Don’t get me started.

I’m edging close to 80 years old and I have never seen the US in worse condition. Back in the late 1950s and the 1960s things were pretty bad, but there was a feeling that there was progress, that things were improving. I don’t have that feeling now.

A good education should help students gain an understanding of where they fit into the scheme of things; it should help them appreciate the achievements of the generations that came before; it should prepare them to add to those achievements. Among other things.

As a life-long left activist, I condemn antisemitism. I condemn all forms of racism and bigotry. I support the right of Israel to exist, and I also condemn the slaughter that’s occurring in Gaza.

“South Pacific Women’s Studies”? Two stereotypes for the price of one. Our resident philosopher seems to think that non-Western cultures and women are not worthy of study.
