Old guy born and raised in Iowa, now living in South-central Texas. Spent most of my life trying to figure out the meaning of life, and now that I have an answer that satisfies me, trying to get it written down before my time's up.

I have a rescue dog that is part Australian Shepherd. She was an absolute mess when I got her at age 1, but on one of our first walks together she saw a herd of feral goats. She looked at me and I gave her a hand signal to move down the road toward the goats, which she did. She flanked them and got behind the herd, then looked at me again. Another improvised hand signal (I had no experience with this, and as far as I know, neither did she) and she was driving the herd up the hill toward me, 30 to 40 feral goats with 5 to 6 foot horns. Did I forget the long horns part earlier? Sorry. We had never practiced this situation either. What was I supposed to do? The only thing I could think of was to point at the woods across the street, and she drove the goats off the road and into the woods. Had anyone been watching, they would have praised us for the calm skillful manner we used, and asked us how much training it took for her to master that task. None, I would say. None at all. It had all been programmed into her brain by her DNA.

There are two things that you never want to see being made: Sausage and laws.

People who are considering doing the wrong thing always benefit from having a co-worker or friend to show them the path of righteousness. I’d guess many of us have been saved at least once by having a good angel to listen to.

If in doubt, follow the directions.

I was born and raised in Iowa, where road salt and Winter were almost synonyms. The folks got a new 1950 Buick for Christmas that year. By the time the mid to late ’50’s rolled around, the floor had some big rust holes that permitted your feet to get wet when you drove through puddles. Also, rocker panel damage, bottom of the doors, etc., etc. I live between San Antonio and Austin now, and rust really isn’t a problem.

Would you go to a doctor or a mechanic to get those bolts tightened?

P.S. Petey is a very sweet “Gentle Giant”, weighing about 86 pounds.

We currently have 3 shelter dogs, ages 7 (Darlin’), 6 (Petey) and 5 (Hank). Darlin’ was a one year old mess when we got her: underweight, mites (Demodectic Mange) ruining her skin, and PTSD. 6 years later she still has nightmares, but is mostly OK otherwise. DNA for her includes Australian Shepherd, Lab, Rottweiler, and others. Petey was about 10 weeks when we got him as a companion for Darlin’. He has DNA from Boxer, Siberian Husky, German Shepherd, Am Staf, and Lab. We got Hank nearly 2 years later. His DNA includes 16 breeds, including Texas Lacey Dog, Border Collie, 6 different hounds, including Catahoula Leopard Dog, and 3% Fijian Street Dog. He is very smart, and can open doors. He also talks, but my understanding of “Dog” is quite weak.

We had 2 half Lab and half Shar-Pei pups. Wonderful dogs. Clancy liked to sleep under the covers down by our feet. Clementine liked for me to read to her, one book in particular, “On the day you were born”. Clancy made it to 13, while Clemmie lived to be 16 1/2, pretty good for a 75 pound dog.
