   Maybe, but that’s the squash we had growing up, and I never came to like it. No doubt it can be cooked in more interesting ways, but it’s that childhood association that will be hard to lose.

   It’s the same with beets. We only had the canned variety. They’re not exactly disgusting, but they are in the category of foods I will never choose and which I will avoid when I can.

   Breaded and fried, okra is great. It’s also what makes gumbo “gumbo”, so it goes well in soups.

    I always liked Brussel sprouts. Not so much squash or okra that is fried without being breaded first (it becomes slimy).
