She announced that the papers they were working on when their teacher collapsed would not be due until the next class the next week. No doubt the class time had already expired by the time the EMTs took Mrs.Horner away. So, no early dismissal and very little to do for the class so far. In one of my last comments last week I suggested the possibility that G&K would have her visit Mrs.Horner and serve as go-between with the campus administration to carry any papers or other class materials, and to text updates to other class members. Such activity could well capitalize on her proverbial “15 minutes of fame”, and maybe bring her head out of the clouds and back to earth as a practical teaching assistant whose self-esteem isn’t overinflated by too much attention. To me, that would be the most valid means for her to “reclaim her Strip”, as you put it.

I dunno about the arc, but the allotted period for the class has almost certainly expired while everyone waited for the EMTs. Hence Luann’s announcement that papers aren’t due until the following week’s class meeting should be deemed to fulfil Mrs.Horner’s instructions; and it should suffice to dismiss the class so everyone may proceed to their next class or whatever, thus complying with the overbearing security-employee demand. I’ve already commented about how this arc could possibly continue forward. If the class members communicate by text on their phones about the class between meetings, Luann might update them about Mrs.Horner’s condition and about any class-related info.

Maybe the campus security employees also man the 911 phone lines to coordinate EMTs and other emergency services. If we’re about to be treated to an arc with Luann at her responsible best, we should expect to see in upcoming days her visit to Mrs.Horner in the hospital or convalescing at home, a visit to some campus administrator to discuss the next class meeting and maybe to carry some materials back and forth between the admin and Mrs.Horner. Luann might even be designated to moderate the next class meeting and perform some teaching assistant tasks. At least she could return any marked papers and collect any outstanding assignments. A lot of the action would depend on how long Mrs.Horner must convalesce before returning to class. After all, her faint may have been merely a brief overexertion hypoxia rather than something more serious with long-term repercussions.

We haven’t seen any reason to expect that any administrator has been notified about the incident. But you are certainly right about the campus security kid, who looks like a student employee with delusions of grandeur. We didn’t see anyone call for him, either, although he might have heard Tara’s call for help. While Luann has already asserted herself once in addressing Mrs.Horner’s faint, and guiding the summoning of EMTs, perhaps she ought to assert herself once more given Mrs.Horner’s instruction relative to the class. She has the teacher’s authorization to dismiss the security kid and to issue the instruction to the entire class that we see in panel 2. It does remain to be seen what followup she may pursue with Mrs.Horner and the school administration regarding the next scheduled class meeting. This arc has some potential, particularly relative to Luann’s “blank slate”.

There’s no need to go overboard, Shipley, looking for exaggerated symptoms. There’s really a very likely explanation for a simple hypoxic faint. She was enthusiastically playing a wind instrument and could easily have neglected to breathe properly. I experienced something similar myself during a strenuous martial arts exercise. My woosiness was for a much shorter period, as I recognized what was happening before complete loss of consciousness and began to correct my error. But my prior training made me aware of the need for careful breath control and the possibility of such a problem. It is unlikely that Mrs.Horner was similarly trained or aware, hence her hypoxia induced full unconsciousness before her autonomic system could begin to restore the ingestion of sufficient oxygen to begin to restore her consciousness. Meanwhile the readers here have been treated to a public service announcement about the proper conduct of pre-CPR procedures and the danger of applying CPR when it is not actually needed.

Not sure about G&K’s intentions for the Vale character, but since he is cast as such a dim bulb he is at least depicted with the redeeming characteristic of respect for the knowledgeable authority he perceives in Luann and associates with his image of a licensed medical practitioner. It doesn’t excuse his prior history of plagiarism, but perhaps it offsets his initial “bull-in-a-china-shop” approach to Mrs.Horner’s fainting spell.

One should not jump to any diagnosis yet, such as narcolepsy. Since Luann is properly asserting herself, and it has been noted here that she has previously used her CPR training properly, we should expect her next actions to include appointing someone with a cellphone to call 911, and someone to go outside the building to watch for the EMTs to arrive and guide them to the room. Meanwhile she should begin looking for signs of breathing and heartbeat, to determine whether Mrs.Horner has merely fainted or if she actually needs assistance to breathe or compressions to pump her heart. Mrs.Horner may not need both. Keep in mind that she has just been exerting herself playing a wind instrument. She may have neglected to breathe sufficiently and thus deprived herself of oxygen, inducing a temporary faint. Overexertion at her age is not unlikely. Luann can apply whatever assistance is actually needed, without exaggerating the response. If others in the room are also properly trained in CPR techniques, Luann may take a supervisory role and direct their actions as needed until the EMTs arrive. Presumably they will be better equipped to measure and evaluate the symptoms and continue treatment enroute to hospital emergency care.

I think you’ve got it! Luann’s creativity is at its most fluid in her dreamstate. If she can remember it when she wakes, she will likely have another excellent story to write. Meanwhile, readers here may get their wish for a more interesting story arc.

As a budding writer, one might expect Luann to show more interest in language — at least in the languages that relate to English or are sources for some of its peculiarities. So it’s a bit odd that she should quail at the thought of learning one or more of them, possibly as a prelude to visiting countries where they are spoken — in this case, Italy being the first suggested opportunity. It’s also no big deal to obtain a passport. It’s worthwhile to have, and getting it is good experience in learning to deal with governmental bureaucracy.

Even so, she needn’t travel anywhere. But if she pursues a class in Italian cooking, will she learn Northern or Southern styles, or both? Might a serious course include recognition of even more localized characteristics, such as Sicilian, Neapolitan, Bolognaise, Venetian, et al?

Isn’t that the old brand of Luann? I thought we just saw a new “blank slate” brand? Even so, it appears that neither brand appreciates the advantage of merely loading a dishwasher in place of washing and drying the dishes by hand.
