One thing I can not understand: what was Hamas thinking when they planned and mounted the Oct 7 attack? How did they expect Israel to respond?
Several things must be done.
First and simultaneously: there must be an immediate cease-fire. Hamas must stop missile attacks and Israel must stop air strikes. Hamas must release all surviving hostages and return the remains of any who have died. And the Rafah gate must be opened to allow humanitarian aid to flow through.
Then everyone sit down together, perhaps under UN guidance, and map out a coherent plan for the future of Gaza. That future would have to exclude Hamas.
A very popular theme here is “innocent until proven guilty”. But that presumes that the accused will be found guilty. The theme should be “innocent unless proven guilty”.
