I eat delicious prunes regularly, and they do not have the effect on me that every TV comedy and comic strip says. Could it be an old wives’ tale? Anyone have actual experience?
I’ve always pronounced the “w” but research shows I’ve been wrong. Don’t have many occasions to say the word.Interestingly, in words that start with “wh” where the “w” IS pronounced, the “h” sound actually comes first. Listen to yourself and and see. It’s shown that way in some pronunciation guides. But most show no “h” sound. One of my high school teachers said pronouncing the “h” is an eastern method, and that Californians (in his opinion and mine) said it wrong. Thus the confusion over hearing a baby wail and seeing a baby whale. No confusion if you say it “right.”Linguists are encouraged to jump in with other opinions and information.
This is not an April Fool gag, just a booby trap. When I started reading Lio years ago, it became one of my favorites. Now Lio is mean, violent, and let’s face it – a murderer. The strip has not been funny for years, and is coming off my daily reading list.
