Clucky chicken is not a toy. She is a visible emblem, a symbolic representation of … er … the innate predatory nature of catkind. Or something. But not a toy. Definitely not.

LOL, our big male cat also likes to “groom” some of his toys. Obsessively. Mind you, he also obsessively grooms himself, and our other cat when she’ll let him. Usually that last one turns into a wrestling match with our little tough girl.

What? They didn’t mention the importance of the box the toy came in! Or the action figure, which is not a toy.

When my Vlad was little, I didn’t have much money to buy him toys. So, I made him one out of old socks being stuff with other material at the toes and some crumpled up paper. Every so often, I add a new layer. Funny thing is, just like Natasha and her purple apple, as soon as I see him play with it, he’ll drop it and look at me like “what?” Though, it’s strange, Socky ends up in the living room, kitchen, bedroom, closet, bathroom….

My friend’s cat had a favorite tinkle ball: a half-red, half-white plastic mesh with a jingle bell inside. Only the red-and-white one. When my friend stepped on it, he had to find a three-pack (the only way they came) that included a red-and-white one: cat ignored the others. And he hid that each night, or the cat would jingle around the bedroom in the wee hours.

We had cats that would turn a plastic bottle cap into a hockey match every time one was tossed on the floor.

In the original strips, I based Puck and Buzzy’s relationship on Elvis and Clucky Chicken in real life! Elvis stole Clucky Chicken off my desk his first Easter as a kitten, and treats him like his baby. (I’ve actually had to stitch his yellow seams back together a few times). I knew I wanted to show how a cat can favor one toy, but Puck seemed the more sensitive of the trio to single out for the comic. And Buzzy Mouse looked the part of a classic cat toy, while Clucky Chicken was a wind up People toy with bunny ears. When I had a chance to start the comic again and expand the world, I knew immediately I wanted to bring Clucky Chicken in (and that readers knew Elvis and the family well enough now to welcome a new, weird little member). And I feel like it makes a lot of sense that Elvis would have tried to leave out his love for a People toy in the original broadcasts, and Burt would naturally edit that right back into the stories!

I thought I’d share a little bit about Clucky Chicken! I hope you like him, he’s near and dear to us just like the real Buzzy Mouse and a few other of the boys’ well loved toys. Right now I should be editing the ink and paint layers to line up for an August Sunday strip, but I get notoriously stir crazy at a computer, and so here I am peeking at the comments instead. I hope everyone is having a good night—and thank you so much for reading my comic!
