I suppose this would be totally un-PC today but back in college we actually had intellectual discussions about the wisdom of forcing moral change on a people who are not ready for it; how it hardens their hearts and makes organic conversion more difficult. Which is why Europe, whose people organically came to an understanding that slavery was opposed to Christian principles, escaped long term institutional racism.
