The Bush admin. paid no attention to history. One of the main reasons the Soviet Union crumbled was the cost – troops & money – of taking on Afghanistan.
And to top it off, the commitment is open ended. No exit strategy. Only a Republican prez could get away with that. One good thing, the increased troops will have more drones into the war. They are the future.
The “barely-there” central government tends to mask the real governmental control of the country which are the various village councils connected by an ever-shifting network of local “warlords”! Afghanistan, as a country, is virtually unconquerable because it really only exists in the structured mentalities of the West. Lightning strikes to “remove” pockets of “disease” is the only viable course – and, of course, this doesn’t fit at all well with western military thought – so invaders keep getting ‘caught’ in their hubristic attempts to prove that THEY won’t caught in the “tarbaby”!
Where are the Trump Disciples claiming what a Great speech it was and what a Great strategy it is — you know, from the Best Negotiator On The Face Of The Planet?
Better to fight the terrorists there… than on Main street… Think about it…wonder why we still have troops in Korea and Japan too…Breen needs to do some serious thinking before he picks up his crayons…

^ Yeah, that’s exactly why we fought in Viet Nam for so long — and with such predictable results.
It’s also why we invaded Iraq, too, right?
