I suspect it’s always been, some are out of control party animals, some are there to actually learn.
I was doing some research about an 18th century doctor from the colonies. As a young man, he studied in England (there being few good universities here). Letters between him and his father consisted largely of requests for more money, and the dad complaining that he’d been getting reports of his son having a little too much fun and not enough study.
