It was based on the premise that women could ask out a male(or propose) only on leap day – so watch out – it can be as dangerous as friday the 13th.

A good way to stay young is to be born on February 29. If I was born on 2/29, I’d be celebrating my 14th birthday this week.

Val looks tired. She stayed up too late with Phil… ;-)@Larry – Also, it wouldn’t be an annual event if it happens every 4 years, but I get your point…

Husband retired 4-years-ago on leap day. Wished he stayed longer, he would have taken a pay cut since he did not work the job he did. He has no regrets and wanted to leave after 36 years.

My great aunt was born Feb 29, 1888. She had to go 8 years without a birthday at the turn of the century because you only have a Feb 29 every 400 years then. For her 21st (88th) we threw her a big birthday party! Hey, she could finally have a legal drink ! LOL She lived another 4 years. A wonderful character and I still miss her 32 years later. I always remember her & a toast her each Feb 29th. Love you Auntie Dora!

The original story from Lil’ Abner was that Saddie Hawkin’s was the Mayor’s daughter and the ugliest girl in Dogpatch. The Mayor decided that the only thing he could do to get his daughter married off was to hold a race where all the elegable bachlors in the town to run a race and if his daughter caught one of them then he’d have to marry her. After Saddie caught and married her man the other girls in Dogpatch demanded the same chance so it became an anual event with all the elegable women chasing the eligable men (who got a head start) while a preacher waited to perform the marrage ceremony for all the winning girls. A Saddie Hawkin’s dance is where the girls ask the boys instead of the other way around.

Leap Year is when a girl asks the boy to the dance or banquet.

I’m nerd enough to have looked this up. Sadie Hawkins Day is in November, and as another commenter said, something from Li’l Abner. The custom of women proposing to men during Leap Year has been around for hundreds of years, long before Al Capp. If a man refuses a Leap Year proposal he must buy the woman a dress or a pair of gloves. Schools usually hold S.H. Day dances in November.
