Of course you have to have a soft drink because of all of the salted butter and salt that is put on it.Popcorn was never served during the silent movies. People used to dress up in their best clothes. A totally different world back then.
We finally got around to seeing Dune 2 the other day. Two senior tickets at the matinee were cheap (in today’s reckoning) but for 2 cokes and a small popcorn we had to mortgage the house. Good grief…
And the movie wasn’t so great…Beautifully photographed and clever effects but the storytelling was poor
I don’t buy food at movies – I always carry a bottle of water and cough drops in case my throat gets dry – but snack prices at movies are crazy. Haven’t been in 4 years – where we retired to does not have a movie theatre and one 1/2 hr from here is old and no reclining seats – got use to those And I haven’t seen ads for anything I’d want to go see
Funny how people remember the prices from way back when, but not so much the wages! If workers are to have a living wage, businesses will raise their prices accordingly. Some may go too far, but last time I went to the movies, I don’t recall a requirement to buy their snacks. I can usually wait 2 hours to eat.
My husband and I are officially old since we’re always talking about how much stuff used to cost. We could get an ice cream cone for 50 cents. A breakfast out – 2 omelets was $7.00. We could often get cans of soup for 50 cents. Going further back I remember my dad complaining when gas was 34 cents a gallon. Yes, wage were lower then so it evens out a bit but only a bit. Today’s inflation is astounding and wages and pensions are NOT keeping up!

He’s probably about as old as I am, and I remember movies were maybe 50 cents and popcorn was a dime. And we had 4 movie theaters in a town of around 15,000. Now we’re over 50,000 and there’s one multiplex. No competition. But the moguls owned the actors and everyone else, and we have DVDs and live streaming and Netflix, etc. so, once in a while it’s nice to get the experience even though I can’t afford to go once or twice a month.
