Why in the world would we be okay with Communist China having free access to our social media? Free to lie. Free to harvest information and meta-information. Without any control.
Tell me again how out own US social media has made us stronger, more moderate/cohesive with a deep understanding of each other’s views so we came effortlessly arrive at uniting common goals that benefit the populace … unlike the [divisive] Chinese owned TikTok app.
Byte Dance (the company that owns TikTok) is already challenging this ban in court, which could drag on for quite some time. So, I’m not expecting TikTok to go away anytime soon. I do think that social media in general should have guardrails to protect personal data like the EU did in the nineties. The Djinn of social media is not likely to be squeezed back into the bottle anytime soon (if at all), but we can set up stronger ground rules for what is said online and how personal data is processed.
It’s a scary world. I remember when my biggest worry was getting caught at “Kick the Can”. I doubt any of these refugees ever had a chance to sing christmas carols or played hide and seek.

You have to wonder why so many support a Chinese spy app on millions of phones.
