Every now and again I like to report on how the Ontario single-payer health care system works, and since Mr. Trump doesn’t like Obamacare, I will post today’s report here. Yesterday afternoon, my father-in-law, who is 91, fell and broke his hip. He will have a hip replacement probably this afternoon. It’s taking a little while because he’s a somewhat complicated case. He has a number of health problems (no surprise at his age) and the surgeon is figuring out how to minimize the surgery. Note that no government bureaucrat or private health insurance bureaucrat is involved in this decision. The doctor looks at the problem and decides what to do. My father-in-law is not likely to live a long time under any circumstances, but there was no death panel which ruled on whether or not he would get the surgery. Right now he needs the surgery, so he gets it. There is no concern about what’s covered and what isn’t, because here everyone has the same coverage, automatically. I don’t claim that the system here is perfect, but it’s pretty good. If you don’t like Obamacare, then consider the Canadian system.
