You can always come to South Africa. We don’t have daylight saving here. Apparently during the war we did, probably because our allies did. :)

Consider: Suppose the government came out with the following edict, “In the interest of energy conservation all schedules and appointments are adjusted as to start one hour earlier than previously scheduled. Examples – if employees are currently scheduled to work from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, they are now required to work from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm; if a sporting event is scheduled to start at 6:00 pm it will now start at 5:00 pm; and so on.”

We’d probably have a mass revolution if this was attempted. However, simply tell everyone to advance their clocks by one hour, which accomplishes what was proposed above, and watch how society meekly complies.

Oh REALLY? That’s how they do it?! I always thought it was done with rockets in the pacific. That’s what the volcanoes are, really. I hate daylight savings time soooo much! What a really great example of Government doing stupid things for narrow reasons and the rest of us suffering for it. Yeah, I thinking of the 55 MPH speed limit too.

In the early days of daylight savings, the farmers complained about losing an hour of sun. They thought the government could slow down or speed up the sun like Biblical Joshua.

It’s March, and here we go again with this senseless changing of the clocks. DST needs to be abolished. It accomplishes nothing but the disruption of human biological cycles. It doesn’t save energy, or benefit the farmers, or any of the other myths that continue to circulate. And it doesn’t make the days longer.

A day is always 24 hours in length. Yes, there is more sunlight during the spring and summer months only because the Earth is tilted on its axis with the Northern Hemisphere facing the Sun. The converse occurs during the fall and winter. It’s called the change of seasons, and it all balances out in the long run. Resetting the clock has no effect whatsoever on the position of the Sun. You have merely been fooled by the government into getting up one hour earlier, which creates the illusion of a “longer day.”

Standard Time is the true time, with noon recorded when the Sun appears highest in the sky, hence the term “high noon.” DST is fake time, and this World War II era practice should have been scrapped decades ago.

Standard Time should be the permanent time. Those who still wish to pursue that mythical “longer day” are free to get up one hour earlier during the spring and summer. Employers could be encouraged to offer earlier starting/quitting times during these months.

Congress is responsible for this DST nonsense. Contact your representatives and tell them to put a stop to this foolishness once and for all.

We went to 24 time zones for a very good reason, when it made sense to coordinate train schedules. Now that we have global-wide communication, the thing that makes the most sense is to go to one world-wide timekeeping system, Universal Time (UT). That way, if a coffee shop in the Midwest that normally opens its doors at 7:00 AM CST (1300 UT) would prefer doing it an hour earlier (which is what 7:00 AM CDT would be), they simply say they’ll be open at 1200 UT starting on April 1. And the hardware store next door can stick to 1300 UT. No reason why everybody has to fiddle with their clocks and watches at all.

This explanation for DST makes just exactly as much as any other. My favorite is the one about how cows wouldn’t be able to be milked on time, like cows can read clocks and farmers don’t know when to milk cows already without a clock.

DST needs to die. If someone wants an extra hour of sunlight in the evening then they can get up an hour earlier every morning and let the rest of us sleep in.

Do most people set their alarm to wake them up Sunday morning? They would not lose any sleep unless they have to get up to go somewhere. I woke up naturally this morning and I feel fine. I will stay up later tonight to adjust to the time change.

Found this comment on Slashdot and it certainly describes the problem:

“I want to go to work one hour earlier (relative to sunlight), so I can have more sunlight after work. But my employer won’t let me change my working hours, so I want the government to change the definition of hours for everyone.”

Of course, the solution is simple enough… find another employer instead of advocating to change time for everyone else to suit yourself. It’s called Standard Time because it’s the standard to follow. Daylight Saving Time is the aberration, it doesn’t save anything, let alone daylight.

You need to learn to do what I do Danae. Early Saturday, get yourself into the mindset that it’s already an hour later. If there’s a clock you reset manually, or you have a watch you manually set, then set it an hour ahead and go by that time. Then you’ll be going to bed early enough to get enough sleep.

I know that the hour “lost” is returned in the fall – but where is it stored in the interim? Do we really trust the security of the warehouses, or is there “shrinkage”? what happens if there’s a fire? Or is that just like filling out forms, and waiting in line at the DMV, and all the other government activities where our time goes up in smoke?
